Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has impersonated Donald Trump during a light-hearted speech delivered at the annual Mid Winter Ball in Canberra last night.

Leaked audio from the event — Australia's version of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner — reveals the PM poking fun at his meeting with the US president in New York last month.

Using short sentences and grand arm gestures like Trump, Turnbull joked around about the meeting.

“It was beautiful. It was the most beautiful putting-me-at-ease ever,” he said.

“The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls.

“We are winning so much.

“We are winning like we have never won before.

“We are winning in the polls.

“We are! We are. Not the fake polls. Not the fake polls!

“They’re the ones we are not winning in. We’re winning in the real polls.

“You know, the online polls. They are so easy to win. I know that. Did you know that? I kind of know that.

“They are so easy to win.

“I have this Russian guy.

“Believe me it’s true, it is true.”

Turnbull was also mocking himself in the speech, since he too is under pressure from poor polling.

In February, diplomatic relations between the Australia and the US were on edge after a contentious phone call during which Trump accused Turnbull of using a refugee resettlement deal to send the US the “next Boston bombers.” He reportedly called the arrangement “the worst deal ever” before hanging up on the Australian PM.
