- Vienna, Austria has toppled Melbourne, Australia as the world’s most liveable city.
- Melbourne has sat in the top spot for the last seven years.
- Australian cities, including Sydney and Adelaide, still make up a big portion of the list's top 10.
Vienna, the capital of Austria, has replaced Melbourne as the world’s most liveable city.
Melbourne sat in the top spot of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index, trailed by Vienna for the last seven years.
This year, Vienna gained an overall livability rating of 99.1, edging out Melbourne which came in second with a score of 98.4.
Vienna’s low crime rate, as well as a downgraded threat of militant attacks in western Europe, helped contribute to its overall win, recording a perfect score of 100 in the stability and safety of the city category.
The stability ranking takes into consideration the threat of petty and violent crime, terror, military and civil unrest.
Melbourne scored 95.0 in stability.
Other Australian cities also featured highly in the index, with Sydney and Adelaide on the list at number 5 and 10, respectively.
Canadian cities also fared well, with Calgary taking out number four, Vancouver in sixth, and Toronto seventh.
To determine the most liveable cities in the world, the index uses more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories — stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
