Just in case you were pondering who would win a race between a Boeing 737-800 and a Tesla Model S, Qantas and Tesla have teamed up to find the answer.
The race was held at Avalon airport in Victoria, with V8 Supercar driver Tony d’Alberto taking the wheel of the Model S.
The race was over Avalon’s three-kilometer length, with the quickest four-door sedan in the world grabbing a headstart over the 737 and its 50,000 pounds of thrust thanks to a roughly 69,000kg weight advantage and all-wheel drive.
It was neck and neck until the end as the Tesla hit its metaphorical wall of a 250km/h top speed, which is just 10km/h shy of the 737’s takeoff speed of 140 knots – and the plane did just that, a trick Elon Musk has yet to add to his electric car.
As part of a new partnership between Qantas and Tesla, all Model S owners will receive complimentary Qantas Club membership, and Tesla is going to hold exclusive events for higher-tiered Frequent Flyer members to show off new Tesla vehicles and technology.
Qantas is also installing chargers in its valet areas at airports for Model S owners to use while traveling. Qantas will also become Tesla’s airline of choice and all Tesla travel is going to be have complimentary cover for Qantas’ carbon offset program.
